The Department of Microbiology has its inception in the year 1994 with B.Sc program and upgraded with the introduction of P.G program in the year 2000. At present the Department offers 5 UG Programs-B.Sc (BtMC, MGC, MZC,MZCA,MGP) and 1 PG programM.Sc Microbiology. The Department of Microbiology provides the students with the scope and opportunities to understand basic and advanced techniques in Microbiology. The members of the Faculty are well experienced in their respective areas of the subject and have been instrumental for the success of the Department. The Department of Microbiology has an excellent infrastructure with three well-equipped labs and an instrumentation room with essential equipments. The Microbiology section of our Library has nearly 1481 books and the Departmental Library has nearly 136 titles. To inculcate research aptitude among the students, projects are designed and supervised in the areas of food, environmental, industrial, medical and applied microbiology and nanotechnology. The Department takes pride in organizing seminars, conferences and workshops at state, national and international levels to provide a platform for students and faculty to interact and gain insights about the latest scientific developments and cutting edge technologies in applied biosciences. The Department is acknowledged as one of the best colleges for its excellent teaching, infrastructure and academic performance of the students
In our department, teaching is not only a profession but a passion. It has an outstanding academic track record of securing gold medals and university ranks from Osmania University. Each and every faculty member interacts well with students and motivates them to pursue higher education. Faculty members identify the learners’ needs through assessment tests and interaction. Steps are taken to explore the hidden talent and originality among students. The department encourages student projects, arranges guest lectures by eminent professors and scientists from national laboratories, and also organizes field trips on a regular basis.

Guest Lectures / Expert Talk/ Workshops/ Orientation Program
The Department of Microbiology In Association with Microbiologists Society, India (MBSI) and Pious UpSkilling Hub (PUSH) organized a 30-hour Certificate Course titled “Entrepreneurship and Start-ups in Life Sciences” from 24th November to 5th December 2025. This course was designed to equip undergraduate and postgraduate Life Sciences students with the essential knowledge and practical exposure required to transform scientific ideas into viable entrepreneurial ventures. A total of 43 students enrolled in this course, showcasing strong interest in biotechnology entrepreneurship, start-up incubation, innovation management, and commercialization of research outcomes.
The Department of Microbiology, St Pious X Degree and PG College for Women organized Micromania 2025, an National Level Online Intercollegiate Competition, as a best practice of the department, on account of International Microorganism Day (17th September). The event aimed to highlight the importance of microorganisms in our daily lives and provide students a platform to express their creativity and knowledge through various contests such as Colony Chronicles, IKS Microbe Nexus, Microbe Graphica, and Microli, with Group and individual entries allowed in each category. Appreciation awards were given to the best submissions in each category, recognizing the participants' efforts and contributions. The event saw active participation from over 115 students across 16 Colleges and Universities in which 10 colleges from Telangana and 6 colleges and universities from outside Telangana.

The Department of Microbiology the much-awaited SWAGतम्- Freshers’ Day 2025 themed Florals & Pastels, with great zeal and enthusiasm on 21st August 2025 at St. Pious X Degree and PG College for Women Autonomous College. The celebration was organized to welcome the first-year students and provide them a platform to showcase their talents while fostering a sense of belonging to the Pious family.
A Guest Lecture was organized by the Department of Microbiology, to introduce students to the fundamentals and diversity of microorganisms on title “Microbes : Unseen Forces With Unbelievable Impact” on 4th August 2025 for I B.Sc Microbiology students The observance of this day underscores the importance introducing students to the fundamentals of microorganisms, their diversity, applications, and relevance in everyday life.
The Department of Microbiology organized an expert talk on the occasion of World Zoonoses Day (6th July), observed on 17th July 2025 by Dr. D. Anil Pavan Kumar, Principal Scientist (Animal Genetics & Breeding), Poultry Research Station, P V Narsimha Rao Telangana Veterinary University, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad. The observance of this day underscores the importance of understanding zoonoses, promoting preventive strategies, and advocating the One Health approach, which recognizes the intrinsic link between human, animal, and environmental health. Students of B.Sc. and M.Sc. Microbiology students benefitted from the talk.
The World Microbiome Day celebration was organised 27th June 2025 with aim to create awareness and educate on how microbiomes affect health, agriculture, and the environment, promoting microbe-friendly choices. The event successfully highlighted the significance of the microbiome and encouraged active participation from attendees. The theme for 2025, "Microbiome 101: What You Need to Know," aimed at making microbiome science accessible and easy to understand.
The Department of Microbiology organized an Expert Talk on AMR as part of the World AMR Awareness Week (WAAW-2025). The invited expert, Dr. B. G. Viswanath, delivered an insightful session focusing on “Antimicrobial Resistance and the Role of Academia: Educate, Advocate, Act Now”. Sir emphasized on the growing threat posed by antimicrobial resistance, how resistance develops and spreads among microbial population, misuse and overuse of antimicrobial agents and the role of surveillance, stewardship, and community awareness. The session proved to be highly informative, engaging, and motivating, strengthening the students’ understanding of AMR and reinforcing their commitment to public health and scientific research.
The Department of Microbiology organized an insightful Knowledge Session on “Microgreen Insights: Nutrition, Growth, and Beyond. Cultivating Health, Sustainability, and Innovation, delivered by Dr. Madhu Salumuri, Founder of Praroha Greens, conducted the session with the aim of deepening students’ understanding of Microgreens—nutrient-rich young plants that are gaining widespread popularity for their remarkable health benefits and ease of cultivation.
The Department of Microbiology organized a Guest Lecture on Restoring sight with a Biomemetic Hydrogel : Innovative approach in treating Corneal Diseases for I & II MSc Micribiology students on 11/04/2025. The lecture aims to provide a broad overview about Biomemetic Hydrogel and its use in developing an innovative, sustainable, and biocompatible solution to treat corneal diseases. A total of 62 students of I & II M.Sc. Microbiology students attended the lecture.
The Department of Microbiology successfully conducted a Capability Enhancement Program on 27th March 2025, aimed at fostering academic growth and industry-oriented insights among students. The resource person for the program was Dr. Chathyushya, Founder & Managing Director of Manna Biotech Ltd. The session was designed to empower students with valuable knowledge, encourage critical thinking, and bridge the gap between academia and the biotech industry. A total of 61 students of I & II M.Sc. Microbiology attended the program.
The Department of Microbiology celebrated International Women’s Day with great enthusiasm on 07/03/2025. The event aimed to recognize the contributions of women in science and society while encouraging creativity and expression through various competitions - Content Writing Competition, Shayari Competition, DIY Card Making, Reel Making.
The Department of Microbiology organized Fermentilicious – A Culinary art of Fermented Foods competition as part of Sarcina Club on 10th February 2025 on the theme World Pulses Day. 20 teams in all participated as a part of the competition.
The Department of Microbiology organized Sarcina Club Day on 10th February 2025. The competitions organized were Model making on the theme “Microbes and Society” and Dress up like a Scientist. 17 teams in all participated in model making.
The Department of Microbiology, in collaboration with the Department of English, organized a One-Day Workshop on Curriculum Vitae Drafting on 22nd January 2025. The workshop aimed to equip outgoing students with the essential skills and knowledge needed to craft effective and professional resumes. Ms. Mary Cecilia, Head, Department of English was the Resource Person for the workshop. A total of 34 students of II M.Sc. Microbiology students benefitted from the workshop.
The Department of Microbiology, St Pious X Degree and PG College for Women organized WORLD ANTIMICROBIAL RESISTANCE WEEK, 18-24th November, 2024 on Antimicrobial Resistance and the role of Academia, Educate, Advocate, Act now, Awareness talk for M.Sc Microbiology on 23rd November 2024. 77 M.Sc students attended the orientation. The resource person for the day was Dr. Samriddha Chakraborthy, MBBS, and Medical Practitioner. The session focused on antimicrobial resistance which represents a profound threat to public health, and its growing global impact necessitates an urgent and coordinated response.

The Department of Microbiology, St Pious X Degree and PG College for Women organized Micromania 2024, an Online Intercollegiate Competition, celebrating International Microorganism Day on 17th September. The event aimed to highlight the importance of microorganisms in our daily lives and provide students a platform to express their creativity and knowledge through various contests such as Video Making, Doodle Art, Poetry, and Memes, with Group and individual entries allowed in each category. The event saw active participation from over 202 students across 26 Colleges and Universities.
Department of Microbiology organised a Guest Lecture on “Emerging Trends in Forensic DNA Profiling & Criminal Investigations” on 1st August 2024.The Lecture was delivered by Dr.Madhusudan Reddy, Staff Scientist & Group Leader, CDFD, Hyderabad. 108 Microbiology Students from III BSc & II MSc attended the lecture.
An Expert lecture was organized by Department of Microbiology, St. Pious X Degree & PG College for Women, with an objective to learn and to raise awareness on an account of WORLD ZOONOSES DAY, on 6th July 2024 by Dr Jayant P. Hole, Scientist D - In charge, Animal Houses Facility, National Institute of Animal Biotechnology, NIAB. The day aims to highlight the importance of understanding zoonoses, their prevention, and the One Health approach, which emphasizes the interconnectedness of human, animal, and environmental health. A total of 101 students of B.Sc. and M.Sc. Microbiology attended the lecture.
On account of World Microbiome Day, Department of Microbiology organized a Guest Lecture by Mr. Ramakrishna Adothu, Group L& D Manager, Dr. Reddy's Labs Ltd on topic “Exploring the Gut Microbiome,Your Pathway to Wellness” for B.Sc and M.Sc Microbiology students held on 27th June 2024.

Alumni Interactions
The first year students of 2023-2025 batch had a Peer Group Interactive session with the Second year Microbiology students (2022-2024) by sharing their experiences and challenges and facilitated discussion on academic assignments. The peer group interaction effectively highlighted student needs and fostered a collaborative healthy environment, setting the stage for continued engagement and improvement for their overall development.
On 19th July 2024, the Microbiology Department had an Alumni Interactive session providing a platform for students to connect with and learn from their accomplished alumni. Ms. Pravallika (2021-2023) – working as in process Quality Control (Production) in Biological E limited, Shameerpet, Genome Valley, Hyderabad was the spokesperson.
On October 26, 2024, Microbiology Department had an Alumni Interactive session with esteemed alumni from the 2021-2023 batch. Ms. Kalyan Vaishali, at present working as Manufacturing Production Associate in Pathnsitu Biotechnologies, Industrial Development Area, Nacharam, Secunderabad, and Ms. E. Keerthi at present working as teacher at Rockford International School, Hyderabad. Ms. Keerthi highlighted her experiences in education and the importance of microbiology in the curriculum. The insights shared by Ms. Kalyan Vaishali and Ms. E. Keerthi provided valuable guidance for students navigating their career paths.
An Alumni Interactive Session was conducted for II M.Sc Microbiology students on 25th March 2025 by our alumni Ms. D. Shravya and Ms. Suchitra (2022-2024). The alumni shared their personal career journeys, detailing their transitions from academia to the professional and industrial world. Ms. D. Shravya discussed her journey in food probiotic manufacturing industry, emphasized the required basic skills and knowledge at the industry level, while Ms. Suchitra highlighted her experiences in education and the importance of microbiology in the curriculum.
Field Trips
UG Life Sciences and I & II PG Microbiology students visited Akshayakalpa Organic – Regenerative Farming R&D Facility, Nandigama Mandal, Rangareddy District, Telangana, on 5th December 2025. The visit provided hands-on exposure to organic and regenerative farming practices, including soil health management, composting, natural pest control, beekeeping, and hygienic automated milking. Students participated in interactive activities such as farm-to-table experiences, vegetable harvesting, and interaction with farm animals. The visit enhanced their understanding of sustainable agriculture and the important role of microbiology in eco-friendly farming systems.
A group of 43 students from II B.Sc Life Sciences and I & II PG Microbiology, along with three faculty members from the Department of Microbiology, visited the Atal Incubation Centre (AIC)–CCMB, Hyderabad, on 2nd December 2025 to participate in the SAMVAAD workshop.
M.Sc. Microbiology students visited Bharat Ratna Dr. B. R. Ambedkar Memorial Library, Osmania University, Hyderabad on account of 80th United Week Celebrations on 24 the October 2025. A total of 15 students of II M.Sc. Microbiology were benefitted from the OU Library visit. The objective of the visit was to provide students with an opportunity to explore the library resources and attend a seminar relevant to the theme on account of International Year of Glaciers & Preservation which aimed to educate students on the importance of glaciers and the need for their preservation
B.Sc and M.Sc. Microbiology students visited CSIR-CCMB, Hyderabad on account of CCMB Open day on 26th September 2025. A total of 28 students of B.Sc. and M.Sc. Microbiology were benefitted from the open day visit. The visit provided valuable insights about their work culture; research challenges and also helped them understand how concepts learned in classrooms are applied practically in scientific research to generate novel ideas through experiential learning

The Department of Microbiology formally inaugurated the Sarcina Club on 27th June 2025 aimed at fostering academic growth, student involvement, and scientific inquiry within the department. Mrs Pritha Ghosh, Head of the Department of Microbiology, gave a heartfelt welcoming speech, stressing the value of extracurricular activities and the Sarcina Club's contribution to a lively academic environment
The Department of Microbiology organized Fermentilicious – A Culinary art of Fermented Foods competition as part of Sarcina Club on 10th February 2025 on the theme World Pulses Day. 20 teams in all participated as a part of the competition.
The Department of Microbiology organized Sarcina Club Day on 10th February 2025. The competitions organized were Model making on the theme “Microbes and Society” and Dress up like a Scientist. 17 teams in all participated in model making.

Dr. B. Susmitha, Department of Microbiology received a Best Women Faculty Award from Kiwi Innovate & Kiwi International Publishing House (KIPH), Ministry of MSME, Tamilnadu on account of Teachers’ Day 5th September, 2025.
Dr.B.Susmitha, Department of Microbiology received a Special Prize and Certificate of Appreciation from Chakravartula Radhakrishna Sahiti Vedika, Warangal, on 1st August, 2025. She was honoured for her heartfelt letter featured in the anthology ‘Amma Ku Prematho’ (Bruhath Lekha Sankalanam), recognized for its literary merit in Telugu language.
