About

The Department of Botany had its humble beginning in the year 1993 and Biotechnology was introduced as its offshoot in the year 2002. Faculty are highly qualified and experts in their respective fields of teaching & research. They constantly work to make students as competent, creative and compassionate individuals by fostering an atmosphere of intellectual rigour , moral values & ethics. The infrastructural facilities are excellent so that research work can be carried out by both students and faculty

The department has carved its own uniqueness in the college by carrying out various environmental activities thereby making students as part of environment conscious citizens. It also carries out Neighbourhood Activities, Seminars, Field Trips , Workshops and Club Activities

In our department, teaching is not only a profession but a passion. It has an outstanding academic track record of securing gold medals and university ranks from Osmania University. Each and every faculty member interacts well with students and motivates them to pursue higher education. Faculty members identify the learners’ needs through assessment tests and interaction. Steps are taken to explore the hidden talent and originality among students. The department encourages student projects, arranges guest lectures by eminent professors and scientists from national laboratories, and also organizes field trips on a regular basis.

Institution Day Celebration 2025

Institution Day of St. Pious X Degree & PG College for Women is celebrated every year on 21st August. In this regard the Department of Life Sciences & Chemistry organised Institution Day Celebrations from 18th to 20th August 2025 with great enthusiasm and reverence. The Chief Guest for the event was Rev. Fr. Marri Reddy. The event was dedicated to depicting the life and virtues of “St .Pious X, our patron saint’’, under different thematic presentations by various academic streams.

“Virtues of St. Pious’’- Life Sciences & Physical Sciences.

As a part of this celebration dance competition with the theme “Seasons of Life “was held on 20th August. The distinguished judges were Mrs. Naga Rekha from St. Peter’s School and Mrs. Laasya Madhukar St.Joseph College, Hyderabad. First prize - Rolling shield and cash prize was bagged by BBA team. Second prize – cash by B.Com team Third prize – cash by BCA team. The objective of this celebration was to enlighten students about the inspiring life of St. Pious and encourage them to imbibe his virtues. The program served as a platform to foster spiritual values, moral integrity and a sense of purpose among students, reflecting the essence of the Institution’s mission.

Orientation on Stress Management

Department of Botany and Biotechnology organized orientation program on Stress Management on 30th June 2025 to the Non-teaching and Supporting staff of the college. The Resource person is a Consultant Psychologist. The orientation included discussions on recognizing stress triggers, managing role ambiguity, and developing coping strategies. Dr. Swapna emphasized the importance of self-care, effective communication, and team building in managing stress.

Students Internship:

Kunchala Pranavi of 3rd BtMC completed a one month summer internship programme from 20th May – 19th June 2025 at Osmania University (Offline) – Center for Microbial and Fermentation Technology (CMFT), focusing on the Microbial Techniques, Fermentation Technology, probiotics and Molecular Microbiology

Manaswi Susarla , Tejaswini Adelly, Sirra Neelim, Vemula Amrutha , Shamini Gude and Maheswari of II BtMC attended a value added course on “IPR and Patenting” from 12 June to 16th July 2025, organized by Dept. of Genetics, Biotechnology at Bhavan’s Vivekananda College of Sciences, Humanities and Commerce. They learned about the basics of patenting, different types of Intellectual properties rights, Case studying on patenting, patent procedure in India, Geographical indication and Gene patenting.

Kunchala Pranavi of 3rd BtMC completed a one month summer internship programme from 1 to 30 July 2025, conducted by Nozarax Audentian (OPC) Pvt. Ltd. which focused on Molecular Cell Biology and Marine Microbiology The objective was to enhance foundational and advanced practical skills applicable in diverse scientific fields. She was hunkered with Best Intern Award and along with the completion certificate and a letter of Recommendation.

N. Divyaanjali and J.Priyanka of 3rd BtMC completed VOICE 4 Girls Internship Programme from 15 June 2025 – 2 July 2025 located at Julywada the first camp second location disha – Munnanur located at Kurnool, Pulluru, parichay camp location

Soft Skill Orientation

Department of Botany and Biotechnology organized a workshop on Resume Writing and Tips on Interview skills for Final year Life science students on 21 February 2025. The resource person of the workshop Mrs. Sindhura Kalita, Senior Strategy Manager, APAC & EMEA, Twilio. alumini of the college batch (2007-2010). She emphasised the students to understand the importance of body language, tone, and communication during interviews Total 83 students attended the workshop.

Institutional Social Responsibility/Outreach Program

On 8 th March 2025, Mrs. Sugantha Mala and Dr. Anjana Shukla along with 8 students of I BtBC and BtMC visited to the Asha Kuteer Foundation, Old Age Home, Boduppal, as a part of Institutional Social Responsibility an outreach program and provided breakfast and lunch to the 42 inmates of old age home. Students interacted with residents who shared their stories and experiences and serve the lunch to them. Total 134 students contributed funds for the breakfast and lunch.

National Mushroom Day

The Department of Botany & Biotechnology celebrated National Mushroom Day on October 15, 2024. The event aimed to create awareness about the importance of mushrooms in the ecosystem, their nutritional value, and their potential applications in various industries. The students of Biotechnology and Botany participated in the competitions held. 45 students participated in Quiz, 21 students in Word search, 18 in Puzzle, 6 in Clay Art. Students got insight to various types of mushrooms growing in varied habitats, differentiate edible and non-edible mushrooms.

Educational trips

Department of Botany & Biotechnology, St. Pious X Degree & PG College for Women organized a Educational Tour to Coimbatore and Ooty from 2 – 8 September 2025. Educational tour comprised visit to several institutions and ecological sites of scientific and environmental importance, Salim Ali Centre for Ornithology, Nilgiri Biosphere Park, and Wheat reaserch Center (ICAR) Kunoor, Pasteur Institute of India, Cuunoor, Botanical Garden Ooty, Horticulture Park, and Tea Museum. The visit provided a unique, immersive learning experience for the students and successfully bridged the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical field experience, diverse flora fauna, ecosystem management, understanding crop improvement techniques, genetic research, and sustainable agriculture practices, insight into the history, cultivation and processing of tea in the Nilgiris.

Visit the ATAL Bio incubation Centre, CCMB, Hyderabad : Department of Botany & Biotechnology in collaboration with Institution Innovation Council on 18 December 2024, visited the ATAL Bio incubation Centre, CCMB, Hyderabad which is a one of India's Premier Biotechnology incubation centres. It supports the development of innovation start-ups, particularly those working in areas of health, agriculture, and environmental sustainability.

Visit to Anathgiri hills: On 25th January 2025, Mrs. Sugantha Mala and Dr. Anjana Shukla along with 44 students of Botany and Biotechnology embarked on an educational visit to Ananthgiri Hills, located in the Vikarabad district of Telangana. The trip aimed to enhance the students' understanding of plant diversity, ecological significance, and the practical application of biotechnology in natural ecosystems.

Awareness Program on YOGA of the hands

On June 15, 2024, the Botany and Biotechnology departments, in collaboration with the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), organized an Awareness Program on "Yoga of the Hands," focusing on promoting well-being and stress relief among supporting staff. 20 staff participated in the meeting.

Guest Lecture:

Department of Botany and Biotechnology organized a Guest Lecture on 11 July 2025 on the topic “Vaccine Production”. The Guest speaker Dr. HarshaVardhan, Director General, Indian Vaccine Manufacturers Association, Hyderabad, covered key aspects of vaccine development and manufacturing using biotechnology. He highlighted his journey and experience in vaccine industry past 60 years. He emphasised on the various types of vaccines and steps involved in vaccine Production.

Department of Botany and Biotechnology organized a guest lecture on Hydrponics “Water Grows Wonders” for the I, II & III years of BtBC & BtMC Students on 7 August 2025. Resource person Mr. Chandpreet Singh Nisthe, Chief Executive Officer, Zeal Biologicals, explain the various types of hydroponics systems, advantages of soilless cultivation, reduced water consumption, increased crop yields, faster plant growth and elimination of soil – born pests and diseases. He also provided a guide on the essential components needed to build a hydroponics system, such as container, a pump, a nutrient solution and rockwool or coconut coir.

Guest lecture was organized on the topic "Hydroponics-Water Grows Wonders" on 7 Aug 2025 for the I,II,III years BtBC & BtMC students.

On August 11, 2025, the Department of Botany organized a lecture on the Vaccine Production from Dr. HarshaVardhan, Director General, Indian Vaccine Manufacturers Association, Hyderabad.

Department of Biotechnology organized a guest lecture on the topic of “Adolescence Health and Wellness” for I, II and III years Biotechnology students on 24th March2025. The resource person Dr. Sylvia Fernandez, Scientist E, National Institute of Nutrition (ICMR), Hyd. The Resource person aimed to educate student’s about the physical, emotional and social changes that occur during adolescence and promote healthy habits and lifestyle choices. Madam enlightened the physical changes occurs during this stage and emphasized the importance of mental health and wellness during adolescence and she highlighted the need for stress management, self-care and positive relationships. She also discussed the importance of healthy habits such as regular exercise, balanced diet and sleep. . Total 112 students attended guest lecture.

On August 24, 2024, the Department of Botany organized a lecture on the "Importance of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants," emphasizing their significance in healthcare and other industries from Dr. Jnanesha A.C, CSIR-CIMAP (Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, Research Centre).

Student Centric Activities:

6 students of II BtMC attended a value added course on “IPR and Patenting” from 12 June to 16th July 2025, organized by Dept. of Genetics, Biotechnology at Bhavan’s Vivekananda College of Sciences, Humanities and Commerce. They learned about the basics of patenting, different types of Intellectual properties rights, Case studying on patenting, patent procedure in India, Geographical indication and Gene patenting..

Student Exchange Programme

Academic Collaborative activity under "Xavier Board of Higher Education" in Association with Nirmala College for Women, Coimbatore The Department of Botany & Biotechnology of St. Pious X Degree & PG College for Women, Hyderabad, in association with The Department of Botany, Nirmala College for Women, Coimbatore, organized a Skill Development Training on Molecular Biology on 3rd September 2025. This program was conducted as part of the academic collaboration activity under the Xavier Board of Higher Education, India. A total of 15 postgraduate students and 2 faculty members from the Department of Botany& Biotechnology, St. Pious X Degree & PG College for Women, Hyderabad and 26 students from the Department of Botany, Nirmala College for Women, actively participated in the training program. The session focused on imparting practical exposure and technical skills in basic and advanced molecular biology techniques. The participants were trained in areas such as DNA isolation and quantification, Blotting techniques and electrophoresis methods, Applications of molecular tools in plant science research.

Eco Club Activity

Department of Botany organized its 20th year of Eco - Club celebrations. 97 students of I, II, III BtBC & BtMC Students took part in the celebrations. Various competitions were conducted like Rangoli (Colours of Sustainability), Poetry competition (Voice of Earth), E- Poster making (Sustainable future our responsibility), E – Photography (Nature through my lens), Eco-costumes and Quiz. Students actively took parts in all the competitions. Dr. Veena Rishi, Retd, HoD of the Department was invited as the Guest for the 20th Year celebrations. Maam highlighted on the Sustainable approaches to safeguard our environment.

Department of Botany & Biotechnology organized Eco club activities on 18 th September 2024 as part of world clean-up campaign included morning session -Awareness Lecture on Bio- enzyme production by Mrs Sunandha an organic farming expert and a alumini of our college, spoke on protocol for production of bio enzyme and its applications as plant growth promoter as well as its role in controlling various pests. Afternoon session had various competitions including "Best out of Waste," quiz, and flashcard competitions, promoting creativity, teamwork, and environmental awareness.
